A FARMERS' market has managed to attract a wide range of stallholders for this weekend's event in Teesdale.

And the latest signing for Barnard Castle Farmers' Market is Whitby fishmonger Jim Hebden, who will, for the first time, open a stall selling a wide variety of seafood.

The Fruits Of The Sea stall will also mark a first for the market, as there has never been a fishmonger present at the monthly event.

John Constable, the coordinator for Teesdale and Wear Valley Farmers' Markets, said the new addition was an example of how diverse the market was becoming.

He said: "We are in our first year of regular markets in Barnard Castle, and so far we have had a great response from customers and stallholders alike.

"This is yet another example of the wide range of stalls that we have at the market, and the more diverse, hopefully the greater number of people we can attract.

"Moreover, the fishing industry has struggled in recent years in a similar way to agriculture, so it seemed right to have a stall selling sea food."

The market will be held this Saturday in Barnard Castle market place, and stalls selling fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, dairy products and home-made preserves will be present.

As well as foodstuffs, there will be a wide range of craft stalls operating at the market.
