RESIDENTS of four Richmondshire communities are celebrating after taking the honours in a council competition.

Bolton-on-Swale, Bellerby, Bainbridge and Richmond emerged as winners in the authority's Best Kept Village and Town contest for 2000.

The winners from each of the population categories will be presented with a tree to mark their successes in ceremonies scheduled for the new year.

Chairman of the economic, cultural and leisure committee, John Blackie, said: "We have been running the competition for a number of years now and the standard of entries remains as high as ever.

"I would like to congratulate the towns and villages that have taken part. The effort they have put in is a credit to them and I'm sure the results are being enjoyed by residents and visitors."

Twenty-seven parishes and four towns took part and entries were judged by representatives from Soroptimist International of Richmond and the Dales.
