EIGHT young people from the Tees Valley have become the first group to graduate from a unique programme of training.

All eight undertook a modern apprenticeship scheme designed to give them skills and experience by working within voluntary and community groups.

Their programme of training has included practical real life work, which has been underpinned by a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level II in business administration.

Director of One Voice Tees Valley Bernard Storey explained: "One Voice Tees Valley is totally committed to the regeneration of the Tees Valley area.

"In view of this the aim of the project has been two-fold. Firstly, we recognised that there was a shortage of good administrative staff in the voluntary sector and secondly, we wanted to provide opportunities for local young people to gain new skills in order to find worthwhile employment and develop their careers."

One young person who has got off to a flying start is John Richardson, 23, from Hartlepool. "I gained valuable experience with Owton Fens Community Association, which I believe played a major part in landing my latest job,"he said.

"I am now working as office manager for Mark Bell Building Contractors, where I have responsibility for managing three staff.

"Although I'm no longer employed within the voluntary sector I am really grateful for the experience I have gained through the project.

Joanne Chapman, 24, from Stockton, was working in the care industry before an injury forced her to change direction.

"I hurt my back so I wasn't able to carry on with my previous job," said Joanne.

"The modern apprenticeship has given me new skills which have led to a job."
