AN optician is asking the public to help visually-impaired people around the world by getting a sight test during National Eye Week.

As part of the national initiative, which runs from Monday, September 25, to Friday, September 29, opticians Pagan and McQuade, which has branches around the North-East, will be donating the cost of every eye examination at their practices in the region during the first day of the event.

All proceeds from the sight tests will go towards the work of the charity Vision Aid Overseas, which helps more than 200 million people in developing countries who are in need of spectacles.

Optician Gary McQuade said : "Several of our opticians take working trips with Vision Aid Overseas.

"We also collect discarded spectacles at our practices, which can be used overseas with the eye care teams.

"With the right spectacles, people in developing countries can learn, work and achieve a quality of life otherwise completely out of their reach."

The charity day will be held on September 25 at all Pagan and McQuade's practices in Middlesbrough, Stockton, Darlington, Hartlepool and Scarborough. Each eye test will cost £16.
