PLANS have been announced to bring a £1.4m development project to Eston.

Supermarket group Aldi plans to build a 12,000 sq ft store, which will revitalise the Eston Square area, as part of a major improvement programme.

The supermarket will be built on the site of a boarded-up store, previously occupied by Presto.

There will also be improvements to walkways, a car park and shop facades.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader, Councillor David Walsh, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to give the people of Eston some very long-awaited good news for the town's centre.

"It has been a long and difficult road because of a series of problems, but we are convinced that our partnership with Aldi is going to produce the end results we have all been aiming for."

Councillor George Dunning, the council's lead member for regeneration, said: "Aldi's involvement is just what we need. They are committed to creating an excellent retail outlet and want to be involved in providing other improvements.

"At last, I believe we've something positive to look forward to for this area."

Work on the store, which will create 12 jobs, is expected to take 25 to 30 weeks. It is hoped work will start next year.

Aldi's regional property director Simon Plumb will give a presentation with the council about the scheme at a public meeting in the Eston Institute on Tuesday, November 21, at 7pm.
