A PROPOSED development of artists' studios and a gallery in Saltburn valley gardens has met objections from local residents.

The scheme would redevelop the former nursery site at Rose Walk, demolish two greenhouses, and build eight studios. The timber clad buildings would have pitched roofs and respect the woodland setting, according to the application. The existing bungalow would be retained as a wheelchair accessible combined home or studio for an artist.

The 26 letters of objection express a number of concerns and request a site visit.

Concerns include: this is one of the few areas in Saltburn where it is safe for the elderly or blind to walk their dogs and this would be lost with traffic; wildlife could be destroyed; and storing hazardous materials could be a danger; the development was not appropriate so close to the Italian Gardens; and Saltburn had sufficient artist' studios.

In response, council officers said traffic would be minimal, the studios would be relatively quiet with activities such as weaving, painting, textiles, potters and stone workers; the site was wholly enclosed with a high wall separating it from the Italian Gardens.

Ten of the 12 units for studios in the Marske Road property have already been let with the remaining two to be let by Christmas. The application was being considered yesterday
