Ghostly goings-on at a supermarket have left staff terrified.

A ghoul has been upsetting workers at Asda in The Galleries, Washington, Tyne and Wear.

And to prove employees are not just imagining the spooky presence, he has been filmed on CCTV security cameras.

Staff had complained of seeing a weird figure - thought to be of a miner who used to work in the area - wandering about the offices and warehouse floor at the superstore.

After an infra-red security system was installed, a strange figure was recorded on film after triggering alarms when the store was empty.

Asda store coordinator Eileen Watson said: "At least five people have seen the ghost and it actually triggered the alarm on the security video, which caught it on film.

"You can make out the outline of a man walking backwards and forwards in the office.

"Quite a few colleagues have seen things and one colleague was sweeping up in the warehouse and felt someone beside her. She turned round and saw the man giving her a hand.

"The admin manager has had photocopiers going off and papers thrown on the floor.

"The ghost normally appears at night and, after the camera incident, we even put a note on the machine saying 'we've seen you'."

Other workers have reported taps turning on for no reason.

But the spirit has yet to spook shoppers.

Store manager Ian Graham said: "I'm still a bit sceptical about it all. We got a new camera system that works on activation and nobody was in the office at the time.

'Something had to be there to move it. I've seen the video evidence, but a ghost setting the alarms off - can you believe it?"
