INSPECTORS from the Office for Standards in Education have given a County Durham school a glowing report.

Toft Hill Primary School was found to be an effective school where pupils reach high standards in national tests for 11- year-olds.

The report said: "Pupils behave well, settling quickly to work and play happily together. English and science results are above national averages, and the school's performance in mathematics was in the highest five per cent of schools nationally.

"Pupils make good progress and reach high standards in English, mathematics and science. This is due to good teaching."

The school was also praised for having a strong and effective management team and being well led by the headteacher.

It also praised the good understanding of school governors of what was happening at the school.

"Parents have positive views about the school," the inspectors said.

The school needs to improve standards in information technology teaching and reading standards at Key Stage 1, but these issues will be addressed in the school management and action plans.

Chris Bell, chairman of governors, said: "The governors are delighted that this Ofsted inspection our pride and confidence in our school. Children are welcomed as part of the family of Toft Hill School from their first day and are highly valued."

Headteacher Richard Whitfield said he was pleased the inspectors had recognised the excellent attitudes and behaviour of the pupils and the support given to school by the parents.

"We always believed we were making good progress, and to have Ofsted confirm this in such a positive way gives us all a lift," he said
