Roseberry Sunday

Invitation League

Roseberry were determined to make amends for the previous week's unlucky defeat against Thirsk - their first of the season - when they faced Norton. Home side Roseberry took command of the game from the start and never looked back, recording a 5-1 win.

With constructive play between captain Sarah McDonald, Jennifer Corns and Charlotte Drury who strung together excellent play. Their fine work enabled forwards Trish Alderson and Nicky Carpenter to penetrate Norton's defence with several on target shots being saved by keeper Steph Klienne or intercepted by defender Denise Collingwood. Roseberry's persistence finally brought reward with their first goal from Lucy Tondziel.

The visitors made several breaks which were intercepted by Roseberry's defence with good clearances from sweeper Julie Hobson who has returned to the team after maternity leave.

Trish Alderson put Roseberry further ahead early in the second-half and she goal-maker, setting up Nicky Carpenter for a third goal.

But Norton made a determined push, with an eruption of yellow jerseys into Roseberry's circle, and Jenny Brown scored.

Roseberry hit back, bombarding Norton's goal and Carpenter collected her second goal and went on to complete a hat-trick.

Players of match: Roseberry, Trish Alderson and Norton, Suzy Bolton.

During the goalless first half, on a cold and wet afternoon, both teams were strong with much of the play in midfield and few breaks and shots from either side.

However, Stokesley took the initiative in the second-half to gain a 2-0 win.

Playing conditions improved in the second-half, the rain stopping and Stokesley finally breaking the deadlock. Guisborough keeper Claire Giles was injured making a save, enabling Stokesley teenager Becky Tait to push the ball over the line. With Stokesley continuing to attack it was not long before Stokesley scored a second. After a quick cross into the circle Donna McDonald was in a position to receive the ball, pushing it across the goalline for her first goal of the season.

Players of Match: Kerry Lewis, Guisborough and Anne Weschenfelder, Stokesley.

Stockton gained a 3-2 away win over Mackinlay while Barnard Castle's game with Thirsk was called off because of a waterlogged pitch as was the game between New Dales and Northallerton.
