LOCAL education authorities in the region are set to share in £82m to raise standards for 11-14 year olds.

The investment will ensure that secondary schools build on the success of primary schools in literacy and numeracy.

It will also be used to target schools where pupils need to catch up in the crucial early years of secondary school.

Around the region, Darlington received £211,323 and an extra £40,000 for literacy and numeracy summer schools, Durham received £527,166 as well as an extra £220,000 for the same summer schools.

The LEA in Middlesbrough got £231,603 plus £70,000 for summer schools, while North Yorkshire received £563,826 and £280,000 for summer schools.

Hartlepool LEA gets £209,763, with £40,000 for summer schools and Newcastle received £272,943 (and £130,000 for summer schools). Redcar and Cleveland gets £237,063 (£80,000 for summer schools), while Stockton gets £241,743 and £80,000 for summer schools.

Sunderland was given £100,000 for summer schools and £266,703 for improving standards, South Tyneside received £238,623, with £70,000 for literacy and numeracy summer schools while North Tyneside got £280,743 (plus £140,000).
