A NORTH-EAST expert on biological waste now has a leading role in an energy organisation.

Dr Gareth Evans has been elected vice-president of the EuroSolar UK branch, and will act as an ambassador for the organisation, which promotes the use of environmentally sound energy sources.

Dr Evans, 39, of Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, joined the organisation in 1994 to help set up the UK branch. He went on to publish a book on biological waste treatment.

Speaking yesterday, Dr Evans said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

He said: "There are several roles and projects that I will be carrying out in the near future.

"In many ways I will be a kind of Geri Halliwell of the biowaste world, but hopefully I can promote the use of environmentally sound energy sources such as solar and wind power."

One of his main aims is to create a visitor centre on biological waste treatment and alternative forms of energy, in the North-East.

He added: "The most important thing to realise is that people make a difference, not politicians."
