A BUS service is being restored following talks between its operator and a council.

The hourly service along Green Lane, in Acklam, Middlesbrough, is being reinstated two years after Arriva withdrew it due to the loss of council funding. Since then, it has followed a more economical route along Oxford Road.

The service is returning to its original route, probably by next month, following the council's decision to underwrite its losses.

Councillor Ken Walker, leader of Middlesbrough Borough Council, said: "I am very pleased with this arrangement and I am sure residents will be delighted that the service is being restored.

"We accept that it is less profitable for Arriva to run the service along Green Lane, but this is the route that provides a better public service."

Steve Burd, Arriva's North-East commercial director, said: "We are appreciative of the proactive approach that Middlesbrough council has taken to ensure that a service is restored to Green Lane."
