A BID to expand a pub into a next-door butchers shop has come up against opposition from English Heritage.
Councillors will consider on Wednesday whether to allow Ye Old Horse Shoe, in Church Street, Crook, to take in the adjoining property, a Grade II listed building dating from the late-1700s or early-1800s.
The management at the pub, which is also a listed building, hopes to create a dance area and a stage in the extra space if it becomes available.
But English Heritage objected to the proposal, saying it would lead to "considerable erosion of its architectural and historic interest".
Planning officials also felt the demolition work needed would be unacceptable, although it did not object to the idea of converting the shop into a pub. The proposal will be discussed by Wear Valley District Council at Crook Civic Centre on Wednesday.
