PLANS to demolish a former nursing home and build four houses on the site look likely to be approved today.

Darlington Borough Council has been asked for permission for the plans, which affect 215 Carmel Road North, in the town.

The site has previously been used as a residential school, offices and a home for the elderly.

Only one letter of objection to the plan has been received, from the Council for the Protection of Rural England.

It said: "The present building is worth retaining and will have potential for subdivision and extension, retaining the character of the area."

Planning officers at the council have recommended the plans for approval.

Members of the council's planning committee will discuss the scheme today.
