An Asian student today told a jury how he "ran for his life" from a group of Leeds footballers before being kicked and beaten unconscious.

Sarfraz Najeib, 20, had left the Majestyk nightclub in Leeds when a man knocked him to the ground and sent his glasses flying.

He told Hull Crown Court: "I thought he was going to hit me again. I jumped up to my feet and heard my brother shouting run.

"I was just running for my life. I was scared for my life and I was concentrating on running away."

The prosecution claim the group of men, including Leeds stars Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer and Tony Hackworth, chased and attacked the student.

Mr Najeib suffered fractures to his nose, cheek and leg, two black eyes, a bite mark to the cheek, and cuts and bruises.

Earlier, jurors saw closed-circuit TV footage of the moments before Mr Najeib was attacked outside a nightclub in Leeds city centre.

The film allegedly showed Leeds midfielder Bowyer in a "victory" embrace with another of the accused after the assault.

Bowyer, 24, Woodgate, 21, and Leeds reserve team striker Tony Hackworth, 20, deny causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Najeib, of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

The three have also pleaded not guilty to charges of affray.

Woodgate and Leeds team-mate Michael Duberry, 24, also deny conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Two other men, Neal Caveney and Paul Clifford, both 21 and from Middlesbrough, deny causing grievous bodily harm, affray and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The trial continues.
