STUDENTS from a Darlington college will have their sporting achievements recognised at a ceremony later this week.

More than 80 students from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College will have their efforts celebrated with presentations by stars from the Newcastle Falcons Rugby Union team.

The club's chief executive, John Parkinson, who is also chairman of Darlington's Mowden Park Rugby Club, and the Falcons' chief coach, Steve Bates, will be presenting the awards.

Among the youngsters receiving accolades will be the college's male swimming team.

Matthew Bowden, Luke Monument, Murray Goodrick and Michael Dowson became national champions in the medley relay at Crystal Palace.

International biathlete Michael Turnbull, European karate champion Amanda Illsley, British Muay Thai boxing champion Craig Shaw, and international volleyball player Ross Enfield, will be among those students collecting individual awards.

Mr Parkinson said: "Newcastle Falcons and Darlington Mowden Park are committed to the local community.

"Both Steve and I are delighted to be involved in celebrating the sporting achievements of these young people."

Friday's ceremony will also see the presentation of player of the year awards and services to sport prizes.
