A COUNCIL hit by a rash of foot-and-mouth cases is stepping up its bid for recognition.
Richmond District Council's chief executive, Harry Tabiner, has written to Environment Minister Michael Meacher to say that the area has been hit as hard as Cumbria and Devon.
"We have experienced the largest number of cases by far in the dales, and this has had a devastating impact on the local economy," said Mr Tabiner.
"A survey of 40 businesses in Wensleydale showed that more than 70 per cent are losing business as a result of the crisis, and many other indicators are showing similar trends across the whole district.
