THE body of a young newlywed has been found with stab wounds at her home in east Cleveland.

Claire Amy Cummings, 19, was found when officers went to a house in High Row, Loftus, after receiving a 999 call from a man who was threatening to kill himself.

The couple had been living together and police say they have some evidence to suggest the couple got married in secret in the last few days.

Claire was wearing pyjamas and was lying on the bed in an upstairs bedroom with a number of stab wounds in her chest. A blood stained knife was found in the kitchen downstairs.

The man was located at Hummersea cliffs, less than two miles away, where he was threatening to throw himself to his death.

But following three hours of discussions with trained police negotiators, he came away from the edge and was arrested and taken to Redcar police station. He is expected to be interviewed at the station later today. Any witnesses are asked to call (01642) 302690
