NON-UNIFORMED members of a North-East fire authority could soon be given loans to help them buy a car to use at work.

On Friday, the Cleveland Fire Authority is expected to approve the introduction of an Assisted Car Purchase Scheme (ACPS) for non-uniformed staff.

The scheme would give employees a loan, at a competitive interest rate, to buy a car for personal and business trips.

At the moment, workers use a pool car for official business or their own vehicle if there is no pool car available.

The new scheme is aimed to encourage more people to use their own cars for work purposes, so that the number of pool cars can be reduced, saving the authority money.

It is hoped any mileage costs would be offset by profits from the loans which are anticipated to be about £200 for every £10,000 loan.

If the scheme is adopted, it will be used as an incentive to retain and recruit staff to the authority.

As well as agreeing to introduce the scheme for non-uniform staff, the authority is expected to discuss the possibility of eventually allowing uniformed staff to enjoy the same loan scheme.
