A MAN who was injured in the latest crash at an accident blackspot has called for urgent safety measures to be implemented.

Frederick Farr spoke out after his Ford Sierra was written off in an accident at Bilbrough Top, on the A64 near York, on Sunday.

Mr Farr's vehicle was involved in a collision with a Land Rover Discovery, which was crossing the west-bound carriageway to get to the gap in the central reservation.

The accident was the latest in a series of crashes involving vehicles passing through the gap, which is sited near a McDonalds burger restaurant.

Mr Farr, 57, of Seacroft, Leeds, said his 56-year-old wife, Christine, needed five stitches to a gash in her head as a result of the incident.

"We had been to the Rufforth car boot sale and were going home when it happened," he said.

"I think all such gaps should be shut on dual carriageways."

The Highways Agency has refused to close the gap until a flyover is built, allowing traffic to cross the dual carriageway.

But work on the flyover will not be completed until 2004 if a public inquiry has to be held.

However, the agency said it is planning to improve safety at the gap later this year, with measures including better signs.

The parents of 16-year-old Jamie Sanders, of Northallerton, who died while trying to run across the dual carriageway at Bilbrough Top earlier this year, have already called for a 50mph speed limit to be put in place.
