A GOVERNMENT-led partnership aimed at tackling property crime has praised examples of good practice in parts of the region.

And the report, by the Property Crime Reduction Action Team (PCRAT), also pleads for more businesses to get involved in the fight against crime.

Highly praised is the neighbourhood wardens scheme in Sedgefield, which was set up in 1994.

The 12-strong force maintains a 24-hour uniformed patrol of the area and figures show crime has fallen by 20 per cent.

Also praised is the West End/Newcastle Arson Task Force, which was set up in 1997 following evidence that 94 per cent of all fires in the West End were malicious.

The task force brings together agencies such as the fire brigade and Newcastle City Council and it has proved highly effective in reducing incidents.

Home Office Minister Charles Clarke said: "Property crime is on the decline, but the battle has not been won.

"I am delighted at the work PCRAT have put in to produce this initial report, which sets out where early progress can be made.

"And I hope that many more organisations can get involved to secure its objectives in reducing property crime."
