A DELEGATION from Wensleydale handed in a bill for £7m to Downing Street on Wednesday.

Mrs Kate Empsall, chairman of the Upper Wensleydale business and tourism association, delivered the demand to the Chancellor at 11 Downing Street.

She and other delegates attended a Rural Business Network rally in Parliament Square to demand more government aid for rural businesses suffering from of the effects of foot and mouth.

The Swaledale delegation was particularly keen to attend to try to get Yorkshire on the funding map. Although the government has promised help "for the worst-hit areas" North Yorkshire, so far, does not feature in that category.

The delgation met local MP and opposition leader Mr William Hague and told him the English Tourism Council needed £38m to relaunch UK tourism.

"We also want £10,000 interest-free loans repayable through the tax system when we are in profit," said Mrs Empsall. "We reiterated that we need to be put on the funding maps because we have had eight confirmed cases in Wensleydale in a ten-mile stretch and 23 cases in North Yorkshire."
