A COMMUNITY has beaten the vandals by installing a new £144,000 children's play park.
The Delves Lane Village Hall Association has opened its play park at Delves Lane, near Consett - and it has already proved a big hit.
The park was built with cash awarded by the National Lottery Charities Board.
It was constructed after 11 council-run parks across Derwentside were closed last year partly due to vandalism.
Chairman of the village hall Tony Westgarth said the new all-weather sports ground and separate play park had been a major success.
He said: "We've had a fantastic response to the play area and we are already getting bookings for the pitch.
