IT is a fear every parent shares - that their children may become involved in drugs.

The picture which has emerged of 15-year-old Catherine Longstaff, whose death is thought to be linked to drugs, is one of an extremely popular, lovable girl.

Tributes have made via The Northern Echo to her lively, community-spirited nature, which led to her forming a youth action group and helping to transform the garden at the Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland.

As we report today, plans are underway to dedicate a garden of remembrance as a permanent memorial to her. It seems a fitting way to remember a girl who clearly brought such colour and pleasure into the lives of a lot of people.

The cause of her death, which has shocked the local community, has yet to be confirmed.

If - as expected - it is proved to be linked to drugs, another young life will have been lost to an evil trade.

Drug dealers, parasites who get very rich through the misery of others, are known to prey on youngsters to get them hooked early.

The police must be given every assistance to help ensure that those responsible for this trade are brought to justice quickly.

Catherine is not the only youngster at risk. Any child - no matter how stable their home life has been - is vulnerable.

So if you know a drug dealer, ring the police now - your action may well save a life.
