A town may soon boast its second resident world record holder.

For Kevin Jefferson, 38, of Stanley, County Durham, is making his final preparations to take the world record for press-ups.

But the father-of-three will not be directly challenging fellow townsman Graham Whalley, who already holds another press-ups record.

Mr Jefferson will be attempting to complete the press-ups on the back of his hands. He will have to do more than 660 of them in less than an hour when he makes his attempt tomorrow.

"It's going to be a real hard one, no doubt about it," said Mr Jefferson who works for a local glaziers. "But I'm feeling confident. I've been into keep fit all my life, the only problem is I've always enjoyed a few beers as well!"

Mr Jefferson, who trains his three sons, two of whom are twins aged nine, to complete press-ups on the back of their hands, will make his attempt at Gary McRory's gym in Catchgate, near Annfield Plain, at 11am on Saturday. He hopes to raise several hundred pounds in sponsorship for children's cancer relief.

Graham Whalley completed 3,420 conventional press-ups in less than an hour to achieve his record.
