Worthington CIU Summer League - The newly promoted Willington produced the shock of the first week of the season when they came through to beat the visiting champions Old Shildon in the decider.

Colin Lomax got Willington away to a great start with a black ball win over Jossie Aldworth. However, the visitors pulled ahead with wins from Billy Goggins and Charlie Blake only to see Jeremy Martin level the match with a good victory over Michael Pratt. In the decider, Willington's Paul Atkinson had a comfortable win over Frank Nicholson.

In the Second Division again it was the newly promoted team who provided the shock result. Newhouse B, fresh from the Third Division, travelled to Brandon, down from the First Division, and won by the odd point. Brandon were never headed until the final frame for Colin Goodrick moved them ahead with John O'Driscoll levelling. Kevin Sample restored Brandon's lead but David Jackson again equalised. In the decider Glen Morton clinched a win for Newhouse with a black ball win over Graham Jackson.

The Third Division also produced a shock result when Hunwick twice led at Leeholme A but went down in the decider. Trevor Lomax put Hunwick into the lead but Ray Gill squared the match. Arnold Fleming restored the visitor's lead with Tony Clish equalising. In the decider Leeholme's Ian North beat John Bate.

Shotton Palms looked to be on for a whitewash win over the visiting Wheatley Hill B when Dave Swindle, Paul Hickman, John Armstrong with a 34 break and Jimmy Evans took the first four points for the home side. However Tony Ellison came through the final frame to take the Hill's lone point.

Wheatley Hill A went down the same route when they entertained Spennymoor A with Alan Hall, Ronnie Peacock, Dennis Clish and Jack Wright taking the first four points for the home side, while Paul Biddle came through to take the last frame for the Moors.

Stanley Central went two ahead of the visiting Witton Gilbert but then had to wait for the decider before making the victory. Harold Grimes and Dennis Payne pushed the Central ahead but Willis Joynes and John Rooney junior levelled. In the decider Stanley's Jim Dufton beat John Rooney senior.

Charlie Hirst put Fishburn A ahead on their visit to Newton Aycliffe but the home side then moved ahead with wins from Ritchie Young and John Briddick. Peter Davison levelled the match and then Brian Quest took the decider for Fishburn when he beat Stuart Neil.

In the Second Division Newhouse A only dropped one point to the visiting Meadowfield, who had Norman Smith as their only point scorer. The home winners were Steve Mountain, Ian Dinsdale, Jimmy Hassen and John Maddox.

Only John Warriner managed to take a point for Crook Belle Vue on their visit to Langley Park, who had points from Kevin Keers, Paul Nord, Ray Coates and Robert Roche.

Durham City managed only one point at home to Sherburn Village when Gary Ward was their lone scorer. Sherburn's point scorers were John Bower, Scott Mallaburn, Peter McGowan and Alan Greener.

West Auckland made a good start to their Third Division programme with a win in the decider at Crowtrees. Andrew Sugden put West ahead but then Sony Hann and Keith McLauchlan moved Crowtrees ahead. Kelvin Fletcher levelled the match with Andrew Dent knocking a decisive 29 break for West to beat Sean Johnston.

Spennymoor B were never headed by the visiting Leeholme B but needed a win in the decider before they clinched their victory. Micky Anderson put the Moors ahead but Mark Brown levelled. Wayne Parry restored the Moors lead only to see Karl Thompson pot the final black to level the match. In the decider Alan Rowell grabbed the final black for the Moors to beat Steve Bainbridge.

Fishburn B made the best start to the new season in the Third Division when they took the first four points against the visiting Tow with wins from Keith Binks, Wayne Oliver, Karl Whitfield and George Whitelock. Charlie Donaghy prevented the Lawyers being whitewashed by taking the final frame.

There was a complete turnaround at the top of the First Division when Hopetown moved to the top after whitewashing the visiting former leaders from Darlington Snooker Club A. This moves Hopetown two points clear of Darlington Cricket Club and Albert Hill, who both had good home wins.

Shildon Elm Road and Northgate moved up share the top spot in the Second Division with a three points advantage over Darlington East End. Barnard Castle Glaxo suffered badly when they were docked two points for failing to ring in their score from their home match against East End. Ferryhill made a late cancellation and failed to travel to Bishop Auckland Gents Club A.
