A Hoggarth and Sons Eskvale and Cleveland League

STAITHES gained a 1-0 win over Grangetown in the final of The Northern Echo Cup at Whitby last week. Staithes scored the only goal of the game five minutes into the second-half when Richie Ward's shot was deflected past Chris Moore. Grangetown responded with Graham Clark's effort blocked by Benj Libbey and a shot from Davy Jones was headed clear by the same player. Staithes were dangerous on the break and Moore denied both Lee Gibson and Glenn Smith. Despite their pressure Staithes stood firm with the closest Grangetown getting being a Michael Millington shot just over from 30 yards and Barry Morrow shooting straight at Thompson. Moore was voted man of the match and overall Staithes deserved their victory, their second trophy this season. An inspired substitution saw the return of the evergreen Dennis Readman, in Great Ayton's final fixture of the season last Saturday, helping them recover from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw. Grosmont, with their fair share of old heads, took a two goal lead through Trevor Leach and Duncan Raw. Richard Hore netted both of Ayton's replies as he finished the season with 26 league goals. Hosts Highland Laddie and Brotton also shared the points in a 2-2 draw. Ade Brown put Laddie in front in the first-half with a well-placed free kick. Ryan Johnson equalised in the second-half before Danny Kraus restored Laddie's lead. Paul Hutchinson then capitalised, punishing a goalkeeping error to give Brotton a share of the points in their final game of the season.

Honours were even in the goalless draw between Lingdale and Lealholm. Home side Lingdale fielded 14-year-old Liam Watson and 15-year-old Terry Agar and Watson went close to a first-half goal from David Brown's cross.

The second-half was equally devoid of clear scoring opportunities with the only two of any significance coming when Andrew Raw shot just wide for Lealholm and Liam Watson forced a diving save from James Gibson.

Two goals from John Hoggarth, a Paul Agar strike and Andrew Jackson's header gave Mackinlay Park a 4-0 win over Hinderwell. Boosbeck, needing a win and other clubs to drop points to have a chance of taking the title, were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Huntsman, a week last Wednesday. Martin Dewing scored for the home side, their 100th league goal of the campaign, with James Allen getting Huntsman's goal. Man of the match Stuart Marsey scored all three goals for home side Goldsborough with Chris Dowson getting Lealholm's goal. Grangetown left it late before winning 3-1 at Great Ayton. The teams were level with five minutes left and Grangetown finally got in front and then scored a late third goal. Ross Milburn netted Ayton's goal with Matthew Batty, man of the match Dean Wake and youngster Michael Meggison on target for Grangetown. Loftus YC completed their season in style with Dave Howse netting a hat-trick in a 5-1 victory at Hinderwell. Danny Jemson and Alex Grey were also on target. Roger Robinson netting Hinderwell's consolation goal. Anchor completed their season with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of visitors Goldsborough on Monday week, Michael Moore scoring Anchor's goal with Barry Wood, Adrian Sanderson and Stuart Marsey all on target for the visitors. Great Ayton exacted immediate revenge for their Saturday defeat with a 7-0 win over Staithes. After a close first-half, Great Ayton scored five times in the second period. Colin Murray finished the game with a hat-trick, Richard Hore scored twice with man of the match, Steven Pennock and an own goal completing the rout. Huntsman edged to a 3-2 home victory against Grosmont. Ian Wagner, Mark Boyd and Shaun Robinson scored for Huntsman with Ben Metcalfe and Victor Hicks getting Grosmont's replies. Boosbeck were comfortable 3-0 winners at Loftus Athletic with goals from Dave Wilson and Shane Breckon (2), giving him 49 goals for the season. The Redcar Mackinlay Park-Grosmont and Highland Laddie-Staithes matches were postponed.
