THE Countryside Warden Service at Billingham Beck Valley Country Park is on the lookout for volunteers.

The service has teamed up with the National Centre for Volunteering in an attempt to recruit volunteers during National Volunteers Week, from June 1 to 7.

On Sunday June 3, there will be a walk around the park to look at some of the work previously undertaken by the warden service and a chance to discuss the work with some of the current volunteers.

This will be followed by an optional conservation taster session in the afternoon, for those who would like a more "hands on" feel for the work involved.

Countryside warden David Askey said: "We are looking for new volunteers to spare a few hours each week to become involved with practical conservation work, such as building steps, tree planting, or work on the dozen or so ponds throughout the valley.

"Many of the current volunteers are retired and come along for a variety of reasons.

"For some it is the opportunity to make and meet friends, or take some exercise at whatever pace they choose. For others it is a great opportunity to spend time out of doors and do their bit to improve the local environment. It is also the best way to gain experience in a very rewarding area of work."

For more information on volunteering call the warden service, on (01642) 397609, or go along to the visitor centre on the day.
