UPBEAT Newcastle manager Bobby Robson laughed off suggestions he is about to quit in the summer after a disappointing season.

Speaking after his side's convincing victory over Aston Villa - a result that will have done little to appease supporters' expectation after a frustrating season - the Magpies' boss was in buoyant mood and insisted his hunger to bring silverware to the club is still as strong than ever.

"Where this business of me leaving the club or the board kicking me out has come from, I don't know," said Robson.

"I'm not under any pressure like certain members of the media have suggested - I'm 68 years old, I'm enjoying my job."

"Obviously I am disappointed that we have not made the progress I expected this season, but I'm certainly optimistic about our chances next season once we get some key players back fit."

"I have spoken to the chairman and everything is fine. He hasn't told me my job is in jeopardy and I never thought for a moment it was."

Robson has come under increasing pressure this season after failing to mount any serious challenge towards European qualification, culminating in a public outburst over letters he received from embittered fans screaming for changes prior to the Magpies' goalless draw with Arsenal.

Dubbing certain sections of the fanbase 'jerks', many had predicted the under-fire boss' spell in the St James' Park hotseat would be brought to an abrupt end this summer with record signing and club captain Alan Shearer one name touted as a potential successor.

Yet the former England boss was quick to defend his comments, insisting: "It wasn't an outburst it was a statement, which has been twisted by the press. If my appetite for the job had not been as good I wouldn't have stood up and fought for my team in such a way."

Long-term injuries to key players such as Shearer and Carl Cort have not helped the Geordies' cause this season, and Robson believes only minor investment is required to restore their fortunes.

"I think if we bring in two more quality players and get some of our long-standing injured players back fit, we will have a very good season," he said. "Everybody said we had a great year last year - but this time we have only finished with one point less."
