FRIENDLY scarecrows, beastly bugs and sylvan sculptures were sowing the seeds for good gardening in County Durham at the weekend.
A Greening and Growing event, at Spennymoor, brought together experts with a range of rural skills.
Visitors could fill hanging baskets, paint clay tiles with raku artist Rob Winter and pick up tips on sustainable growing from gardener and broadcaster Simon Cross.
They could make their own nest boxes, weave willow sculptures, take plant cuttings and buy compost bins.
The St John Ambulance Brigade, Finchale Training College, Durham Wildlife Trust and Durham Organic Gardeners ran stalls.
For children, old clothes given by Durham's St Cuthbert's Hospice provided a chance to create scarecrows with Estelle Casey, Community Rangers coordinator for Sedgefield borough, and her assistant Helen West.
The event was sponsored by Northumbrian Water, Sedgefield Borough Council and the learning shop.
