A £3,000 grant from Barclays New Futures will help youngsters at a Darlington school develop a new playground.
The cash will go towards the resurfacing and development of an unused outdoor area at Beaumont Hill School and Technology College.
Students plan to furnish it with picnic tables, benches and planters and are fundraising to buy the equipment.
A newly-formed group of students with autism and severe learning disabilities, called The Phoenix Group, is making decisions regarding the venture.
