POLICE are cracking down on youngsters whose rowdy behaviour is making people's lives a misery.

Groups of teenagers congregate regularly at Seaham's West Grove Shopping Centre, and police have received reports of anti-social behaviour and damage to property in the area.

Now officers are warning the youths that they face tough measures if their behaviour continues.

Sergeant Steve Taylor said: "Despite the fact that many of the youngsters see it as just fooling around with their friends, the people who own the shops, and residents who use them, find it intimidating.

"On occasions, threats of violence have been made to shop owners.

"Those behaving in an anti-social manner should be aware that there are a range of powers which can be used against them for prosecution - anti-social behaviour orders and parenting orders, up to possible eviction from council homes if it is deemed appropriate."

He also urged parents to take responsibility for their children's actions.

"It is no good them adopting an 'out of sight and out of mind' attitude, as many do at present," he said.

Beat officers have stepped up patrols in problem areas and discussions have taken place with residents and the business community about what action they would like to be taken.

Their comments have been forwarded to Easington District Council, which will look into their feasibility.
