WORK on the first phase of a £1.2m regeneration programme to improve town and village centres is to start soon.
Durham County Council has secured English Heritage funding for the project, which will make major improvements to Seaham town centre, Barnard Castle, Cockfield and Durham City's North Road.
The money comes from the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme, which is helping towns and villages to carry out important strengthening and refurbishment work on old buildings.
English Heritage has pledged £175,000 towards the first year of the three-year programme, and £450,000 in total.
The scheme will cost £1,201,000 and the rest of the funding will be supplied by county and district councils and County Durham Environmental Trust
