TALENTED North-East gardeners are celebrating after winning coveted awards at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council won a silver medal for its display, which pays tribute to the Royal British Legion's 80th anniversary.

There was a bronze for Darlington, for its exhibit on the Victorian heritage of a town park. A team of six gardeners worked non-stop for weeks on the Darlington Borough Council entry, called South Park past and present, to make sure it was ready for this week's show.

Gateshead's entry, titled The Red Carpet, shows the progress from an area representing the dangers of war to a more peaceful zone representing the work of the British Legion.

Council leader George Gill said: "This is a wonderful achievement and it is now the fifth year in a row that we have won a major award at Chelsea.

"Gateshead has a strong reputation for providing excellent parks and floral displays throughout the borough.

"Getting national recognition for this expertise is always welcome, both for the council and the horticultural staff who have worked long and hard to produce this fantastic exhibit."

A total of 50,000 plants were prepared for the 40ft display, which will be on show at the Gateshead Summer Flower Show from May 27 to 29.
