A DISABLED man has criticised a council for failing to complete major repair work on a pavement, eight years after it began.

Polio victim Jack Ambler, 68, said Durham County Council almost laid a new path at Park Road, South Moor, Stanley, eight years ago, but stopped half-way.

He has complained that it is increasingly hard for him to walk the streets of the community where he has lived all of his life.

He said: "I've complained about this time after time and never get anywhere. They did a wonderful job, laid a new path and stopped half-way. What is the point of that? The state of the path where they stopped is absolutely disgusting.

"I would issue a challenge to our councillors here before the elections to finally get this sorted out. I think this is a safety issue as much as anything else."

A county council spokesman said repair work had been completed on the rest of the pavement three years ago, but it was designated of sufficient standard not to warrant an entirely new path. He said the authority was considering completing the work in future programmes.

He said: "Unfortunately, we have limited resources and the rest of the path was considered to be of a sufficient standard and we had to stop somewhere. We did complete extensive repair work three years ago."
