A 74-YEAR-OLD woman gave chase when a young man snatched her handbag.
The pensioner, who did not manage to catch the robber, was returning from a charity shop where she works as a volunteer, when the man struck in Chillingham Road, Heaton, Newcastle.
Police are keen to speak to the driver of a red-coloured saloon car who stopped to help as the woman chased the man towards Chillingham Metro station.
The contents of the woman's blue canvas bag included a pair of black suede shoes, two china cups, two soft back books with charity stickers on, and a purse with cash.
The suspect, believed to be in his twenties, has been described as 6ft, of heavy build, and wearing black trainers and tracksuit bottom and a grey tracksuit top which was open, as well as a dirty cream-coloured baseball cap.
The woman was shocked, but unhurt
