A YOUNG art student who was killed in a road accident last year is to be remembered by pupils at her former school.

Emma Howard, who was 18, died in a crash just after returning from a trip along the west coast of America in March.

Her parents, John and Vicky Howard, have set up a prize for the A-level art student who has shown the most improvement at Malton School.

They will present the first Emma Howard Memorial Prize at an exhibition tomorrow.

Mrs Howard said: "When she left school she and her boyfriend decided to take a year out before going to college. They had travelled around America for a few months and it was soon after that that Emma was killed.

"Emma worked at Eden Camp and at Kwik Save in Malton, and when she died her fellow workers held a collection for her which raised quite a bit of money.

"We have had this money for a while now, so we thought it would be nice to set up a memorial by which to remember Emma."

Stephen Fearnley, deputy headteacher at the school, said: "Emma was a good student and enjoyed being here. Tragically, she was killed, but this is the perfect way to honour her memory."
