More than 30 fire fighters from across Teesside helped workers at Huntsman Chemicals, Wilton, near Redcar, deal with a sulphuric acid leak at the weekend.

One company employee was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure following the escape of acid on the nitro-benzene plant, but was given a clean bill of health and discharged.

The drama lasted no more than an hour from the discovery of the leak to the completion of a clearing-up operation.

Part of the plant was shut down to allow an investigation into the cause of the leak, but the plant was back on line yesterday.

The Huntsman spokesman said an alarm triggered the county emergency services to come in.

"The plant was shut down and isolated before these people arrived. At no time was the general public in any danger. Nothing escaped from the plant. It was only a pin prick leak.''

The Health and Safety Executive yesterday confirmed that it is investigating that leak and an escape of acetophenone from the Hartlepool firm of Baker Petrolyte at the weekend which resulted in three men requiring hospital checks.
