JOHN Booth, who is standing in Hartlepool against his former employer, Peter Mandelson, wrote to Home Secretary Jack Straw yesterday demanding an immediate inquiry into "bizarre and troubling" events surrounding his campaign.

Mr Booth's allegations range from inexplicable difficulties with his telephones to stolen literature to the returning officer suddenly changing his legal advice so that Mr Booth could no longer stand under the title Genuine Labour.

Elsewhere in the town, LibDem candidate Nigel Boddy has spent the weekend campaigning on the NHS.

"It is gridlocked," he said. "It is a staggering indictment of the Conservatives' legacy and Labour's timidity."
