PLAYERS will be descending on North Yorkshire from around the world later this year for the Yorkshire International Open Golf Croquet Championships.

Golf croquet is a high speed version of the more traditional game, with players hitting the ball at more than 40 miles per hour.

The lawns of Ripon's Spa Hotel will be used for the championships on August 10, 11 and 12, with world champion Khaled Younis of Egypt flying in to compete.

He said: "It's a truly international event and I know I will be pushed all the way by leading competitors, including an extremely keen Yorkshire team."

One of the organisers, Samantha Curry, said: "The event has also attracted the defending champion Hasssam Hamed Ellabban from Egypt, and top players from America, Australia and Ireland, as well as England."
