A SCHEDULE of suggested walks has been drawn up by the North York Moors National Park Authority as a way of boosting tourism suffering because of foot-and-mouth disease.

The park's authority hopes the walks will boost local tourism and help those hoteliers whose trade is being hit as visitors stay away.

A total of 13 walks have been identified on paths open for walkers, following risk assessments with the Ministry of Agriculture.

However, most rights of way remain restricted because of the likely contact with livestock.

Andy Wilson, chief executive of the North York Moors National Park, said: "Despite restrictions in many areas there are substantial lengths of paths now open and useable by walkers, including parts of the Cleveland Way National Trail.

"Hopefully, people will book accommodation in the National Park as they take up the walks, bringing back some of the lost trade the tourism sector has suffered by people staying away.

"There is more than a week's good walking to be enjoyed."

The walking itinerary is available in text version only on the National Park's website www.northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk, or contact the Moors Centres on (01287) 660654, (01845) 597426 or (01439) 770657.
