YOUNGSTERS have been designing the shape of the public transport of the future.

Bus operator Go North East teamed up with RTC, one of the UK's leading technology transfer companies, to stage the Student Public Transport Innovation Competition. Students were invited to develop ideas for transport.

The winners included students from Emmanuel college, in Gateshead, Thomas Hepburn Community School, Gateshead, Prudhoe Community School, Northumberland, Manor College of Technology, Hartlepool, and Sacred Heart High School, Newcastle.

The were invited to a presentation at the Stadium of Light, in Sunderland, and then enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of Go North East's bus depot, in Sunderland.

Yvonne Dixon, Go North East marketing manager, said: "The creativity of youngsters in this region is immense and we are delighted to provide them with an opportunity to channel their ideas into something that may benefit everyday life for people in the North-East.

"The volume and quality of entries was extremely high and I would not be surprised if some of the designs produced are visible on the region's roads in the future."
