A mansion could be in line for a major makeover if councillors give the go-ahead for extensive work to be carried out.

Today, Teesdale District Council's development control committee will discuss plans for the work to be done at Wycliffe Hall, in Teesdale, County Durham.

Planning officers will recommend that permission be granted.

The Grade II listed building was sold to an anonymous buyer last June for £2.5m.

Its sale followed weeks of speculation that rock legends Sir Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton were among those interested in buying the hall.

It boasts a ballroom, seven reception rooms, kitchen and library. It also has two cottages and 400 metres of the River Tees, and is surrounded by a deer park, parkland, woods and formal gardens.

Plans were submitted to the council in March, and include major internal work, such as installing new fireplaces, panelling and doors, and alterations to some of the windows.

External work would include building a portico, replacing doors, improvements to parts of the roof, as well as putting up new walls, gates and fences around the site.
