ABOUT 6,000 people saw Durham University row their way to glory in the North's own university boat race.
The banks of the River Tyne were crammed with spectators catching a glimpse of a thrilling climax to the fifth annual Northumbrian Water Boat Race between Newcastle and Dur-ham universities.
Overall honours went to Durham, who took the Freshers' and Mens' VIIIs titles, while Newcastle's Women's VIII triumphed with a two-metre winning margin - the closest in the event's history.
The chairman of the Boat Race executive committee, Graham Rayner, said: "This has been the most exciting boat race yet.
"For the crews to produce rowing of this standard under difficult conditions is a tribute to their dedication and commitment to their sport."
Geoff Haggon, of Gateshead Borough Council's events and promotions department, said the event was beginning to grow - a feeling borne out by the high turnout despite Saturday's choppy conditions.
He said: "The River Tyne has a long and proud rowing tradition and the University Boat Race is reviving that.
"Interest is growing each year, and it is certainly becoming one of the highlights of the North-East's sporting calendar."
