A STUDENT will spend his summer in San Francisco thanks to his success in a design contest.
Teesside University student Simon Richie, 21, won £1,000 in the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce student design awards. His prize-winning design is an inhaler for asthma sufferers, which he created for the RSA's medical products section.
He plans to use his winnings to fly to San Francisco on a working break, looking at the work of design companies. He said: "I looked at inhalers from the viewpoint of a young and active person. My design tries to make the inhaler into a lifestyle accessory, something of personal value like a mobile phone or a pager."
When preparing his design, Mr Richie, of Peterlee, County Durham, consulted local nurses. It reached a shortlist of ten, and he travelled to London for a final assessment by a panel.
Mr Richie's inhaler will feature in Teesside University's Design Degree show, at the university from June 11 to 14, and at Lookers Audi showroom, in Thornaby, on June 16 and 17
