A SCHEME which has helped hundreds of elderly, disabled and underprivileged people adapt and repair their homes is celebrating five years of success.

Care and Repair Easington, one of the first Home Improvement Agencies set up in County Durham, celebrated its anniversary at Seaton Holme, in Easington Village.

John Cummings, the local MP when he launched the project in 1996, was there to congratulate the agency.

The organisation, which is based at Easington Colliery and is managed by Three Rivers Housing Group, helped more than 540 people with financial, technical and practical help.

Set up as a non-profit making organisation, it helps people adapt and repair their own homes so residents can remain living there in comfort and with independence.

Eric Dowson, project manager, said: "Providing ramp access, a stairlift or level access shower facilities for someone with mobility problems can transform their quality of life.

"Housing needs can change dramatically when a member of the household develops a physical disability, whether as a result of an accident, illness or becoming frail with age.

"We work on their behalf as an independent broker with numerous professionals, including occupational therapists and contractors, to ensure that the work is of good quality and appropriate to the client's needs."
