EXPERTS have artificially aged the voice of Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer Wearside Jack.
Scientists hope his aged voice, which they claim to have traced to Castletown, Sunderland, will help to trap the hoaxer more than 20 years after he hampered the Ripper inquiry.
For three years police thought the killer of 13 women was from the North-East, until they arrested Peter Sutcliffe, from Bingley, near Bradford, West Yorkshire.
The Wearside Jack tapes, played to the nation in 1980, went on to haunt the man leading the Ripper hunt, the late chief constable of West Yorkshire police, George Oldfield.
Dr Peter French, a forensic speech and audio analyst, has been called in to work on the tape. The result will be heard for the first time as part of the TV series Real Crimes.
Real Crime: The Hunt for Wearside Jack will be shown on Tyne Tees at 10.30pm, on Wednesday.
