A SUMMER scheme has been created to help school leavers in Darlington.

The Department for Education and Employment scheme aims to give youngsters the chance to develop team working and life skills, and build their confidence.

More than 50 young people have signed up for the scheme, but there are still places left.

Participants can go on a free five-day residential course at Langdon Beck Youth Hostel, upper Teesdale, to try kayak canoeing, abseiling, gorge walking, survival, rafting and climbing.

Members of Darlington Borough Council's community education department will work with the youngsters to help them develop action plans and assess training and education needs.

Councillor Don Bristow said: "This is an excellent opportunity for the young people of the town to find out more about themselves and what they want and need for the future.

"Leaving school is a big step for any young person and can be especially daunting if the individual hasn't developed a clear idea of what they would like to do next.
