LIBERAL Democrat peer Lord Smith was campaigning in the North-East yesterday.
Lord Smith, a professor of politics in Yorkshire, visited Durham City where he met students and academics from Durham University.
Lord Smith held a forum on tuition fees and higher education issues at St Mary's College.
He was accompanied by Carol Woods, LibDem parliamentary candidate for Durham City.
She said: "It is important to Liberal Democrats that everyone is able to reach their full potential.
"That means no dissuading people from going on to university by placing them in financial difficulties.
"We would scrap tuition fees and reintroduce maintenance grants immediately."
Lord Smith said: "I had some very intelligent questions from the students at St Mary's who are concerned not just about tuition fees but higher education in general."
