COUNCILLORS have refused planning permission for a former betting shop to be turned into a pizza takeaway.

Altan Bulduk sought permission from Durham City Council to open the business in Front Street, Kelloe, near homes and the former pit village's workingmen's club.

Councillors on the development control committee had been recommended to reject the scheme because it would cause disturbance to residents.

Council officer Neil Smith said: "A hot food takeaway is likely to attract an increased number of car-borne users, with the inevitable consequences of doors slamming, engines starting and vehicles manoeuvring, to the detriment of local residents."

Councillors heard that three letters of objections had been sent by residents, who were worried about noise, litter and smells.

The objectors were also concerned that it would add to the problems of youths congregating in the area.
